It’s early morning. The sun transmits a steady warmth. There is a light breeze, gently blowing through my hair. I make my way down the pathed hill. Tall bushes in full bloom stand either side of me. Lilac flowers covering the leafy green, their sweet scent surrounds me. In the short distance, I see the sea glistening beneath the sunlight. A thousand diamonds sparkling before me.
Flowers guide my way and soon enough, I come to a set of steps, carved from the volcanic rock. I make my way down. The last few steps are swallowed by the creamy white sand. I instantly remove my sandals, bare feet sinking into the sand that feels like burning hot lava. Microscopic grains fill between my toes. I dash towards the sun loungers, feet skipping over the unsteady floor below me.
I reach the parasol, the shade cooling the surface beneath me. Laying down on the rough, yellow rubber lounger, I relax in the sun and take in my surroundings. Slow, gentle waves come gliding towards the shoreline. The sea appears to ripple in the wind. I breathe in the lightly salted air with the scent of sun cream. There is only a few people around and it is quiet enough to hear the soothing waves break in front of me. I lay there, sunbathing, peaceful and relaxed.
It’s midday. A bird flies overhead, squawking. I open my eyes to see the empty loungers around me are now filled. People are scattered. The quiet has been replaced with laughter and chatter. Children splash around in the chilling water, jumping the small waves as they soar towards them. I scan the skin on my body, visibly darker than this morning.
Making my way to the water’s edge, I see glimpses of seashells, some broken, some whole. A rainbow of colours. The cooling ocean swipes at my feet. The sea is so calm. I notice there is almost no foam as I stroll into the water. I laugh as fish dance around my legs, tickling my soft skin.
Looking out at sea I notice a large pile of rocks sticking out from the ocean’s surface. Several swimmers are racing to see who gets there first. Banana boats and pedalos are also spread out over the aqua liquid. Beyond the mist and low cloud, I can just about see another island in the distance.
Turning around to face the land, my eyes follow the line of mountains, behind the row of hotels. The dusty brown backdrop is picturesque. I lay on my back and float, staring up at the bright blue sky.
Making my way back to my lounger I hear music playing from the bar above me. Almost immediately, my stomach grumbles. Sparrows hop around my feet as I gather my things and make my way to the bar.
After ordering a Margherita pizza, I find myself a stool that overlooks the busy beach below me. My attention is drawn to a father and son, playing in the sand. Light brown clumps of wet sand fly from their bodies as they run around one another. Another tiny toddler shrieks as his dad throws him into the clear water. His head popping back up to the surface instantly.
I stare down at the large wall of rocks that the bar has been built above. Something dashes across the dark grey boulders. I squint my eyes. A little lizard is almost fully camouflaged. His grey and green body hiding from any predator that may be close by. He stays completely still as a large, old, moth-eaten seagull waddles past. It’s pale yellow, evil eye, oblivious to the potential snack that is only steps away.
It's early evening. The sky is now a mixture of fiery orange and blazing red as the golden sun says goodbye for the day. Most people have already left. I look around at the handful that remain, soaking up the day’s last rays. It’s almost silent.
The sun sets and the air begins to chill. The slight wind feels much colder without the radiating sun shining down on me. I am the last person on the beach. The sand and sea almost blend into one as the deep, dark blue spreads for miles. The restaurants light up the stretch of the island. Bright whites, pale pinks and sunny yellow lights all mix together. The towering palm trees cast shadows everywhere they stand. As I leave, I take one last look back, the black sky hides the sea.
The busy beach falls asleep as the town comes alive for the night.
